But the adult hover fly uses nectar as “fuel” to fly around to find aphid colonies in which to lay its eggs. The more fuel it can access, the more it can fly and the more eggs it can lay. The closer the fuel source is to the aphids, the less fuel is consumed flying to the aphids. Therefore, I make sure there are many conveniently located flowering plants throughout my fields
